"Asking someone how long they believed in Santa Claus is so meaningless that it couldn't even serve as worthless gossip. Regardless, if you're going to ask me how much of my childhood I spent believing in an old man in a red suit, I can confidently say that I never believed in him in the first place.
I knew that the Santa at the preschool Christmas event was just a fake. And if I jog my memory, I'm pretty sure that the other kids watching our principal dressed up as Santa didn't look like they thought he was real either.
In fact, I suppose I was just a precocious child who questioned the existence of an old man who only worked on Christmas without me even having to see Mommy kissing Santa Claus. Regardless, I didn't realize that aliens, time travelers, ghosts, demons, espers, or evil organizations and the heroes who battle them out of cartoons, SFX movies, and comic books were not real until some time later.
No, I had probably already realized the truth. I just didn't want to admit it.
Deep in my heart, I wished that aliens, time travelers, ghost, demons, espers or evil organizations might pop up in front of me.
Compared to the ordinary world I wake up to and fall asleep with, the worlds depicted in stories found in cartoons, SFX movies, and comic books have yes, a certain charm to them.
I wish I could have been born in one of those worlds!
Save a girl who's been kidnapped by aliens and imprisoned within a giant, transparent pea shell. Repel a laser-wielding time traveler trying to change history using only my knowledge and bravery. Take care of evil spirits and demons in one incantation. Engage in psychic battles with espers from a secret organization. Basically, those were the kinds of things I wanted to do!
Wait, let's calm down for a moment. Assuming that aliens, (etc.) were actually to come attacking, I, possessing no particular special powers, would have no means to battle with them. So I came up with a few ideas.
A mysterious transfer student suddenly arrives in my class one day. That student turns out to actually be an alien or time traveler or whatever, just something along those lines that possesses unknown powers. Then we have the student fighting against some evil gang, and I just have to get caught up in that fight. The other student's the main one doing the fighting. I'm just backup. Hey, that sounds spiffy. Damn, I'm smart.
Or. Maybe this. Just stick with wondrous powers suddenly awakening within me one day. Telepathy or psychokinesis or the like. Turns out there are a bunch of other people with special powers. Naturally, there's an organization gathering those people. Members of the good organization come to get me, and I end up joining them in their battle against evil espers seeking world domination.
However, reality is rather cruel.
Fact is, no one ever transferred into my class. I've never seen a UFO before. Going to all the local haunted spots yielded nothing in terms of ghosts and demons. Staring intently at the pencil on my desk for two hours didn't even move it a micron. And there's no way glaring at the back of the head of the classmate sitting in front of me would let me read his mind.
One has to admire how well the laws of physics were written. And feel the urge to laugh at yourself. At some point, I stopped being glued to TV UFO specials and programs on psychics. They can't possibly exist... though I kind of wish they did. So I suppose my ability to hold convictions while accepting reality is a sign that I've matured.
As I graduated from middle school, I also graduated from those childish dreams and became accustomed to the routine of this world. The year 1999 was my last hope, and it wasnft like anything was going to happen there. We've reached the 21st century without humankind making it beyond the moon. It looks unlikely that travel to Alpha Centauri and back within a day will happen in my lifetime.
With those thoughts in the corner of my mind, I entered high school without a care in the world—
